Our new equipment and next visit on Tuesday, July the 20th

Hello Friends!!

Thanks to your support with the donation for the fabric patch, the stickers and the safety cards we raised the amount of 299 € necessary to buy a small 2000 Watt generator on special offer. This device is very necessary for us since, due to the huge distance to the closes power outlet, we were limited to use only tools with batteries.

This way we'll be able to use sanders, power washers and other machinery we couldn't use until nowadays and that we'll try next July, the 20th.

Once agai, thanks a lot for your support. And remeber, if you want to get our exclussive heat and bond patch you only have to request it in our e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , contributing that way to save the Coronado.

Signature gathering for the declaration as a Good of Cultural Interest. Help us!

Hello everybody.

As many of you already know, from the "Amics de Son Sant Joan" association we are striving to avoid the loss of the Spantax Convair 990 Coronado aircraft with registration EC-BZO, which is abandoned in an appendix to the East military apron of the Son Sant Joan Air Base.

In addition to the group we created a year and a half ago in the social network Facebook, called "Salvemos el Convair Coronado de Spantax", 8 months ago we started to work intensively on the development of a dossier to request the declaration of the aircraft as a good of cultural interest. After the work was done we produced a document of more than 40 pages which explains in detail the history of this aircraft from its roll out at the Convair factory until nowadays.

In order to demonstrate to the institutions that people is also concerned with our aviation-historic and tourist-historic heritage we have created a form for collecting signatures, which we will show in the next meeting with the representatives of the heritage of the Balearic Islands. if you want to cooperate with our initiative please click HERE

Please, refrain from signing if you do not wish to provide or do not hold a passport number.

Once again, thank you very much for your support.

Best regards.

Steps to follow

  1. Our first work on the airplane will be inspecting the fuel tanks searching for possible fuel remainders, as well as the engine oil reservoirs and the hydraulic fluid reservoirs. Removing the possible hydraulic fluid present on board will be one of the most delicate tasks, since the brand used by this aircraft was Skydrol, which is quite irritating for the human skin. We're already in contact with an environmental agency and already have a budget in order to take away all these fluids. With all the fluids awaya, we'll disconnect the battery and remove it from its rack (which is behind the radome) and take it to a recycling point.

  2. After that, we'll clean all the airplane with a pressure washer, hot water and special soaps in order to remove all the dirt accumulated after 23 years. For this purpose we count on the support of a company dedicated to that business.

  3. Next step will be reinforcing the whole landing gear. Though all the struts look good and are firmly assembled to their respective spars, the associated components such as the side braces, drag braces, etc. are very corroded, but fortunately they don't suffer from exfoliation corrosion and in our opinion the rust of those components could be cleaned and the components re-used. Apart from this, the right main landing gear and nose landing gear have their respective pistons compressed, which is normal after 23 years. But the left main landing gear has its piston extended, and we would like to compress it in order to prevent a possible sudden compression while working in other areas of the airplane. Once we manage to level the position of the aircraft by compressing that strut, it in necessary to jack the airplane for the following: either to replace or retread the current tires and install new rims or remove the rust accumulated in them.

  4. With the landing gear safe and firm, we'll start cutting fuselage and wing panels which are seriously affected by exfoliation corrosion. In this case, since the airplane doesn't have to fly, all these skin repair works will be done in a similar way to those performed on a car. So, although we'll follow the Structural Repair Manual, the severe and strict requirements necessary for aircraft in flight, won't be followed scrupulously.

  5. Once that is completed, we would like to repaint the airplane with the Spantax classic colour scheme. Next will be cleaning and fixing the inside of the airplane. The passenger cabin is pretty well, it basically needs deep cleaning, but the cockpit was parted out and we need to search for spares.
